Bethany’s Edinburgh Care Shelter provides a free night shelter and sleeping facilities to people who are homeless. Started in Edinburgh in 1996 with a 2-week pilot over Christmas, the Shelter has grown over the years to span six and a half months over the winter, providing overnight shelter every day of the week from October until April.
The service is run by a small team of staff and relies on around 1,000 volunteers from churches across the Lothians. They provide church venues for people on the streets to sleep in on a nightly rota basis as well as preparing and serving a hot meal. The Care Shelter is funded by the voluntary donations of trusts and foundations, individuals, local churches, companies and communities.
On Friday 6th December 2019 staff at Charles White Ltd Edinburgh held a charity night in our office along with our contractors to raise funds for the Bethany Trust Buy a Bed Campaign. Between them they raised a staggering amount of £1,387 for this great cause which enabled a homeless person to obtain a hot meal and a bed for the night, the amount raised will pay for 66 homeless people a night in a warm bed space and a breakfast in the morning.
The care given by the Bethany Trust to the homeless persons of Edinburgh is immense. A massive thank you to all who attended and donated so generously.

In the summer of 2019, 200 life-sized sculptures of Scotland’s favourite son, Oor Wullie, will take to the streets of Scotland’s five main cities for an 11 week mass participation public art trail. Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and The ARCHIE Foundation (Scotland’s three children’s hospital charities) are the benefitting charity partners, working with DC Thomson and Wild in Art to deliver the event.
Hitting the streets on Monday 17 June and running right through until Friday 30 August, the Edinburgh trail will be made up of 60 spectacularly and individually designed Oor Wullie sculptures and we are inviting everyone in the city across the summer to download the free mobile phone app, pick up a trail map and become a tourist in their city/country for the summer to find all the Oor Wullie sculptures. This event is going to be the largest that the world has ever seen; we are hoping to set a Guinness World Record! It’s a brilliant, fun, family-friendly event and a fantastic way to spend a summer, all whilst raising awareness and funds for children and young people in hospital and healthcare settings across Scotland.

On Sunday 5 May 2019 three staff in the Belfast office of Charles White Ltd, Phil, Alan and Andrew accompanied by two others between them, ran the Belfast marathon. They raised a staggering amount over £3,000 for the Belfast Children’s Cancer Unit.
In September 2017 the daughter of one of the team members, who at the time was only three months old, was diagnosed with a very rare pulmonary soft tissue cancer. Following many courses of chemotherapy and an operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital, she is currently taking part in a drug trial through the Royal Marsden Hospital. Its been a very difficult time but in spite of her treatment she is keeping very well and enjoying life in all it glory.
The care received from all three hospitals has been tremendous. The compassion and support the family have received has been outstanding and they wanted to give something back for the benefit of others in the future. A massive thank you to all who sponsored the team.16th February 2019

Charles White Ltd hosted a charity night in September to raise funds for the Archie Foundation which is a charity for sick children within Scotland.
A nephew of a close friend of a CWL employee was diagnosed with Leukemia in April 2017. After the family spending months in the RACH, the Archie Foundation became a charity very close to their hearts which inspired them to sign up to tackle the Great Wall of China Trek in 2018. At Charles White Ltd we wanted to show our support and encouragement for this fantastic cause and at a charity fundraiser attended by staff and some of our contractors raised £200.11th August 2017
At Charles White Ltd the staff regularly arrange events throughout the year from cake bakes to sponsored walks raising money for charities both local and national. Whilst as a Company we partner with The Bethany Trust the staff chose to fund raise for projects and charities close to our hearts.
In May this year one of our staff worked incredibly hard organising a tea party at her home for Marie Curie and wanted to say to all who contributed:
“A massive thank you to everyone who came to eat cake selflessly so that we could say a huge thank you to Marie Curie for everything they do selflessly for us and the ones we love when we need it most.

As part of our desire to make a difference in the lives of our communities, Charles White Ltd have partnered with Bethany Christian Trust to help run a coffee morning for elderly residents in a local sheltered housing complex.
Our aim is to enhance the lives of others by tackling loneliness and isolation within our community.
It has been our pleasure to visit the residents fortnightly; serving coffee, building friendships, playing games, listening to music and eating lots of treats together. At first, the group of residents were very quiet and reserved, but our team persisted to engage with residents encouraging them to share their likes, dislikes, stories of the past and what they would like to do in the future.
Four months later, the group is growing in numbers and noise with chatter and laughter between the Charles White team and the residents. Long may these friendships continue to grow.
