Registration Information for Landlords

National Landlords Registration Scheme

Before a landlord markets their property for let in Scotland they must be registered with their local authority. The fee to register as a landlord is £55, payable every 3 years, with an additional fee of £11 for each property owned. If a property is owned by joint owners (e.g. spouse) then all owners must apply and unless they are related each must pay the £55 fee.

How do I register?

You can register online or by post. Landlords applying online will receive a 10% discount. To register online go to www.landlordregistrationscotland.gov.uk. The website will ask for your agent’s registration number, which for properties in Edinburgh is 00506/230/08250. Please see below for our registration number in other local authorities in which we mange properties. To request a paper application form contact The City of Edinburgh Council Environmental Health department on 0131 469 5293.

If at any point in the future your details change you must contact the local authority so that the register can be amended.

Can Charles White Ltd register my details?

It is the responsibility of the landlord, rather than Charles White Ltd, to register. Charles White Ltd does not currently hold the necessary information on individual landlords to be able to register them. If you would like Charles White Ltd to register you as a landlord please complete the enclosed form in full and return it to our office. We will then pass your details and those of the properties we manage for you on to the council and pay the appropriate fee from your rental income. Please note that there will be a charge of £25 + VAT for this service (the £25 + VAT charge covers registering you as an owner and up to 3 properties. If you own more than 3 properties a further charge of £5 per property will be levied).
 
HMO properties

If your property is registered as an HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) then the council will automatically transfer your details and those of your HMO properties onto the register free of charge. If you own additional non-HMO properties then you must register these by 30 April.
